She has worked closely with loved ones to teach them exercises or techniques for faster progress. She is certified in the Pyramid Approach to Education or Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) and VitalStim. She is trained in Physical Prompts for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Target (PROMPT) and Deep Pharyngeal Neurological Stimulation (DPNS).
TECHNIQUES
Total Communication
Utilizing nonverbal modalities (e.g., eye gaze, head nod/shake, hand or body movements, facial expressions, etc.) to answer yes/no questions, make requests, and exchange communication. This system has shown great success for individuals with severe physical and neurological disabilities and is often combined with PROMPT in an attempt to create word approximations, such as, "Ma", "Da", "Ya/na".
PECS

Picture Exchange Communication System. This means of communication is utilized to
facilitate initiation of a
conversation. This system has shown great success for individuals who are nonverbal, learning to become verbal, and/or for children who have autism.
Story and/or Play Time

Utilizing books and play to entice communication, increase receptive (understanding) language, and increase expressive language (expanding the use of language).
Hands and Touch

Touch is the foundation for language learning for individuals who are Deafblind.
MOVE
Move Opportunities Via Education Program.
The SLP is trained to move individuals who have physical disabilities to progress in physical movements (e.g., rolling, crawling, climbing, walking etc.)
Sensory Processing Diet

Utilizing Deep physical input to increase brain efficiency, increase the ability to focus, and decrease behaviors in children with ADHD and/or Autism
EDUCATION STRATEGIES
Gustatory
Stimulation
A type of thermal stimulation, in which frozen glycerin swabs are utilized to stimulate the sides, medial, and back of tongue to increase range of motion of the tongue, to decrease a delayed swallow, to decrease reflux, and to reduce risk of aspiration (fluid from entering the lungs).
Oral Motor exercises and stimulation
This technique is utilized to gain strength and range of motion of all articulators; i.e., the tongue, lips, jaw, cheeks. Exercises may include chewing gum, different consistencies of foods, horns, instructive exercises or any creative activity that may benefit the individual.
VitalStim
A form of neuromuscular electrical stimulation that helps recruit and re-educate muscles in the process of swallowing. Electrodes are carefully applied to neck and stimulated through an electrical unit by a certified pathologist.
PROMPT
Physical Prompts for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Target.
This system is utilized to create new neurological pathways from the brain to the articulators. The brain needs to gain ability to communicate to the articulators how to produce the sounds in words (i.e., a trained SLP takes her fingers to shape the lips, cheeks, tongue and/or jaw).
Pyramid Approach

This program supplies various strategies to provide support to increase confidence and decrease frustration within a structured environment like the classroom.
